Solvent Buddy has an exciting new entry level opportunity ideal for a recent OH&S graduate with experience or an interest and willingness to learn about Compliance; we are willing to train the right individual.

Position Summary

The Safety & Compliance Coordinator is responsible to provide general safety and administrative support for our Federally Regulated Occupational Health and Safety program; as well as expert guidance in the transportation of TDG.

This position will include, but is not limited to the processing, record-keeping and reporting of driver and employee training files for our online safety portal and requires a thorough knowledge of Federal compliance regulatory requirements and Occupational Health and Safety.

The successful candidate will have Strong Organization skills, be a Self-Starter and be Self-Directed, and is comfortable with Field Work.

This Full-Time Permanent position will be based out of our Edmonton, Alberta head office; conveniently located in the west-end close to the Anthony Henday.

Experience working with Energy Safety Canada as well as exposure to the Federally Regulated Transportation industry is a definite asset.

Safety Accountabilities

  • Daily interaction with employees, ensuring Safety awareness is a top priority for all employees;
  • Ensuring all employees are appropriately trained and ticketed for their assigned work;
  • Ongoing maintenance of our safety portal (employee files of tickets, training ect.);
  • Ensuring accident and incident investigations are conducted and recorded in our safety portal in a timely manner and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrence;
  • Conduct serious incident investigations into high consequence incidents and near-miss events, implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrence;
  • Regular onsite job observations and BBO’s are completed at regular intervals;
  • Identify Safety coaching opportunities throughout the organization, offer yourself as a Safety subject matter expert and actively participate in improving safety awareness and compliance;
  • Manage WCB claims full cycle;
  • Actively support the Return to Work program and processes;
  • Maintain the organization’s Energy Safety Canada COR program and status;
  • Support the Alcohol and Drug Policy and Program in conjunction Human Resources;
  • Participate in the new hire orientation and on-boarding process in conjunction with Human Resources and Operations;
  • Completion of Pre-Qualification packages and Employee Mobilization for on-site field work;
  • Responsible to complete field work as necessary, ensuring a presence on all large projects and jobs;
  • Inventory, order and issue PPE and consumable items;
  • Regular interaction with Ownership Group, Managers, Supervisors, and Key Personnel to ensure Safety activities are incorporated into planning;
  • Liaise with regulatory agents to develop effective working relationships and support regulatory compliance;
  • Participation and follow up of the Workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee;
  • Participate in Operations Meetings;
  • Daily, Monthly, Quarterly, and Annually tasks including:
    • Ensure the following required documentation is completed on a daily interval
      • Daily field level hazard assessments
      • Daily toolbox meetings
      • Daily vehicle inspections
      • Daily pre use equipment inspections (forklifts, skid steers)
    • Ensure the following required documentation is completed Monthly or Quarterly (as appropriate)
      • Monthly general Health and Safety meetings
      • Monthly shop, office, and yard fire inspections
      • Monthly fire extinguisher inspections
      • Monthly ramp inspection
      • Monthly water tank inspection
      • Quarterly Workplace Joint Health and Safety meetings
      • Conduct inventory and complete inventory report
    • Ensure the following Annual action items are completed
      • Energy Safety Canada COR audit as per audit cycle
      • Develop and implement action plans based off COR audit findings
      • Emergency Evacuation drill conducted
      • Review of all written formal job hazard assessments, ensuring they meet or exceed standards
      • Review of all written safe job procedures, ensuring they meet or exceed standards
      • Review of all written safe work practices, ensuring they meet or exceed standards
      • Review and support all company Health and Safety related policies
  • Arrange, complete and follow up for Third party annual inspections as listed below
    • Fire alarm system
    • Emergency exit lights throughout the facility
    • Fire extinguishers annual certification
    • All harness and lanyards annual inspections
    • Air compressor tanks annual inspection and certification
    • Air ventilation system annual inspection
  • Other duties as assigned

Compliance Accountabilities

  • Subject matter expert of federal, and provincial transportation and hazardous materials and waste regulations related to properly qualifying regulated drivers, and all related record-keeping and reporting;
  • Lead in the development of compliance programs, policies, and procedures with the least amount of impact on the operations;
  • Set-up, organize, and maintain the online safety portal office filing system including confidential data;
  • Enforce, perform, assist in and coordinate safety training, relating to driver and compliance training such as load securement, trip inspections, log books;
  • Ensure new hires are properly trained in their daily duties to include all required paperwork related to transportation;
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations and record keeping concerning all transportation matters such as National Safety Code, Carrier Profile, etc.;
  • Enforce policies and standards, and ensure compliance with transport regulations;
  • Monitor, Counsel, and Document driver violations of any provincial, federal, or local laws or company policies or regulations;
  • Conduct investigations to determine causes of incidents;
  • Direct investigations to verify and resolve customer complaints;
  • Ensure Driver/Vehicle files are up-to date and properly maintained;
  • Conduct monthly inventory and create inventory reports;
  • Generate and maintain data and reports;
  • Conduct driver road tests;
  • Assist with the implementation of electronic log books;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • OHS Certificate or Diploma;
  • Familiarity with Federally Regulated, Health & Safety Procedures and management system;
  • Familiarity with Federally Regulated, Transportation Legislation and Compliance;
  • Experience with TDG;
  • 2+ years of administrative support experience;
  • Strong organization skills;
  • Proficient in Windows based applications;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines;
  • Able to maintain confidentiality;
  • Must have an active driver’s license with no restrictions and a clean driver abstract;
  • Must be able to pass an Alcohol and Drug pre-employment screening test and comply with the Solvent Buddy Inc. Alcohol and Drug Policy and Program.
