OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY ADVISOR

Solvent Buddy Inc. has been providing businesses, both large and small, with specialized equipment in waste management and industrial services since 1996. Also adding as of 2017, Chemical Cleaning to its services. Since humble beginnings on the south side of Edmonton the company has grown and now has three locations in Western Canada. Solvent Buddy provides a complete range of services into light industrial, aviation, forestry, mining, oil and gas. OPPORTUNITY SUMMARY

Solvent Buddy Inc. is seeking a goal orientated OH&S Advisor to provide guidance for the ongoing management and continuous improvement of the OH&S programs and systems throughout the Solvent Buddy Inc. group of companies in Alberta and Saskatchewan. This position is based out of our west Edmonton, Alberta head office.
Solvent Buddy Inc. is Federally Regulated, knowledge and experience working within these guidelines is a definite asset.

GUIDANCE

• Stewardship of the OH&S programs to ensure alignment with the organizations strategies and objectives
• Expertise and experience working with Federal Motor Carriers, Commercial Vehicles and Drivers requirements is an advantage
• Acting as a change agent and leader in continuous improvement with the OH&S managed system
• Exemplify the desired culture of Safety and Teamwork throughout the organization

COLLABORATIVE INTERFACES

• Daily interaction with Ownership Group, Managers, Supervisors, and Key Personnel to ensure OH&S issues are incorporated into planning and executed on
• Leadership and follow up of the Workplace Health and Safety Committees
• Liaison with internal clients, external third parties, and clients with the provision of meeting expectations and increasing awareness of OH&S matters
• Liaise with regulatory agents to develop effective working relationships and support regulatory compliance
• Participate in operations meetings, planning and strategy sessions
• Identify OH&S coaching opportunities throughout the organization, offer yourself as an OH&S mentor and actively participate in improving safety awareness and compliance
• Monitor staff safety awareness and compliance implementing action plans as necessary
• Support the Alcohol and Drug Policy and Program in conjunction Human Resources
• Participate in the new hire orientation and on-boarding process in conjunction with Human Resources and Operations
• Serve as OH&S subject matter expert and technical resource

OPERATIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Responsible for the maintenance and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System
• Ensure safe work procedures and policies meet standards
• Oversee and/or perform hazard assessments and workplace inspections
• Conduct safety audits, establishing an understanding of baseline performance and develop strategies for support continuous improvement
• Maintain the organization’s COR program and status
• Maintain Solvent Buddy’s profile and account on third party websites to ensure we are able to competitively bid on contracts
• Provide information for pre-qualifications and RFP’s
• Provision of risk management support to achieve a common OH&S program throughout the organization
• Develop and implement health and safety training modules to help build a sustainable safety culture
• Lead serious incident investigations into high consequence incidents and near miss events, producing detailed documentation and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences
• Ensuring accident and incident investigations are conducted and events reported in a timely manner
• Conduct trend analysis’, monitor and report on performance and develop improvement strategies based on performance trends
• Manage WCB claims full cycle
• Review and analyze WCB rates and cases and actively supports the Return to Work program and processes
• Support site, shop, and project safety meetings by providing relevant information for use during the meetings and actively participating throughout as needed
• Conduct site health and safety audits and inspections
• Prepare weekly and monthly reports as required
• Continue to transition the organization’s WHMIS MSDS to SDS as needed
• Ensuring facilities are meeting fire code regulations
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• A diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline with coursework in industrial health and safety, including 3-5 years of experience as an OH&S professional that would include managing an OH&S management system from both a technical and strategic perspective, safety auditing, occupational hygiene, contractor management, project management, hazard control, incident management, operational OH&S KPI reporting

• A certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline with coursework in industrial health and safety, including 10 years of experience as an OH&S professional that would include managing an OH&S management system from both a technical and strategic perspective, safety auditing, occupational hygiene, contractor management, project management, hazard control, incident management, operational OH&S KPI reporting

• National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation
• COR Auditor recognition
• Knowledge and experience with OH&S management systems and audit tools including the Certificate of Recognition (COR)
• Proven skill in the development, implementation and management of OH&S management systems
• Extensive working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation in Alberta and Saskatchewan
• An understanding of business drivers and the ability to influence and facilitate the implementation and maintenance of the OH&S managed system
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Operational field experience
• Valid Driver’s License and acceptable Driver’s Abstract
